Over 10% of the U.S. population has diabetes; it is seen in patients of all ages. This seminar will review the fundamental principles of diabetes management. From a review of the physiology and pathophysiology concepts of the pancreas and diabetes to the three diabetic emergencies, an array of topics will be covered. Both the acute care, as well as the primary care aspects of management will be discussed, including the different classes of medications and management priorities. With this knowledge, attendees will be better equipped to manage patients with diabetes.
